Fiscal sponsorship is a relationship in which a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization provides its tax-exempt status and other administrative benefits to a project that fits within the purview of its mission. 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt status is required by many foundations, corporations, and government agencies in order for projects to be eligible for funding. Additionally, 501(c)(3) status allows contributions from individuals to be tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Donations intended to support a particular project are treated as restricted funds dedicated to furthering that project’s purpose.
